Abstract

This paper presents a nonlinear analytical model for micromechanical silicon ring resonators with bulk-mode vibrations. A distributed element model has been developed to describe the dynamic behavior of the micromechanical ring resonator. This model shows the nonlinear effects in a silicon ring resonator focusing on the effect of large amplitudes around the resonance frequency, material and electrical nonlinearities. Through the combination of geometrical and material nonlinearities, closed-form expressions for third-order nonlinearity in mechanical stiffness of bulk-mode ring resonators are obtained. Using the perturbation method and the method of harmonic balance, the expressions for describing the effect of nonlinearities on the resonance frequency and stability are derived. The results, which show the effect of varying the AC drive voltage, initial gap, DC applied voltage and the quality factor on the frequency response and resonant frequencies, are discussed in detail. The nonlinear model introduces an appropriate method in the field of bulk-mode ring resonator design for achieving sufficient power handling and low motional resistance.

Abstract

This paper addresses the experimental identification of a servo actuator which is used in many industrial applications. Because the system consisted of electrical and mechanical components, the behavior of the system was nonlinear. In addition, the under load behavior of this servo was different. The load torque was considered as the input and a two input-one output model was presented for this servo actuator. Special focus was given in order to present a simple model for this servo actuator. The comparison between simulation and experimental results showed the effectiveness of the propose model. The model can be applied as a reference for characterizing different designs and future control strategies.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the tracking and synchronization problems of hyperchaotic systems based on active backstepping method. The method consists of a recursive approach that interlaces the choice of a Lyapunov function with the design of feedback control. First, a nonlinear recursive active backstepping control vector is designed to track any desired trajectory in hyperchaotic Wang system. Furthermore, this method is applied to achieve hyperchaos synchronization of two identical hyperchaotic Wang systems. Also, it is used to implement global asymptotic synchronization between hyperchaotic Wang system and hyperchaotic Rössler system. Numerical simulations have been employed to verify the effectiveness of the three designed active backstepping control vectors.

Abstract

A new and highly efficient architecture for elliptic curve scalar point multiplication is presented. To achieve the maximum architectural and timing improvements we have reorganized and reordered the critical path of the Lopez-Dahab scalar point multiplication architecture such that logic structures are implemented in parallel and operations in the critical path are diverted to noncritical paths. The results we obtained show that with G = 55 our proposed design is able to compute GF(2163) elliptic curve scalar multiplication in 9.6 μs with the maximum achievable frequency of 250 MHz on Xilinx Virtex-4 (XC4VLX200), where G is the digit size of the underlying digit-serial finite field multiplier. Another implementation variant for less resource consumption is also proposed. With G=33, the design performs the same operation in 11.6 μs at 263 MHz on the same platform. The results of synthesis show that in the first implementation 17929 slices or 20% of the chip area is occupied which makes it suitable for speed critical cryptographic applications while in the second implementation 14203 slices or 16% of the chip area is utilized which makes it suitable for applications that may require speed-area trade-off. The new design shows superior performance compared to the previously reported designs.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and a new low-cost process for fabrication of a second-order micromechanical filter using UV-LIGA technology. The micromechanical filter consists of two identical bulk-mode ring resonators, mechanically coupled by a flexural-mode beam. A new lumped modeling approach is presented for the bulk-mode ring resonators and filter. The validity of the analytical derivation is investigated using the finite element method by ANSYS software. The new low-cost fabrication process is used to achieve a high aspect ratio of 16 with 3 μm gap spacing. The rigid graphite serves as a low-cost primary substrate and plating base of nickel as structural material. The fabrication process needs only three UV-lithography steps with Mylar masks to fabricate the main structure and pattern the printed circuit board as a secondary substrate. The frequency response of the fabricated filter is characterized as a function of the DC-bias voltage using a fully differential drive and sense interface circuit. The experimental results demonstrates micromechanical filter with center frequency in the vicinity of 10.31 MHz and percent bandwidth less than 0.3% using a DC-bias voltage of 60 V. The detailed fabrication process can be applied as an appropriate low-cost alternative to X-ray LIGA and silicon-based micromechanical filters.

The effects of aberration on the Bit-Error-Rate (BER) and reliability of free- space optical (FSO) communication links are investigated. Based on aberrated divergent rectangular partially coherent flat-topped beam formula on the receiver plane and considering the atmosphere losses due to absorption and scattering, numerical values for Power In Bucket (PIB), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and BER are calculated. Using above mentioned values, the effects of source parameters on link reliability is described. The results are illustrated by graphs obtained by calculation and simulation.

Abstract

Fault classification in distance protection of transmission lines, with considering the wide variation in the fault operating conditions, has been very challenging task. This paper presents a probabilistic neural network (PNN) and new feature selection technique for fault classification in transmission lines. Initially, wavelet transform is used for feature extraction from half cycle of post-fault three phase currents at one end of line. In the proposed method three classifiers corresponding with three phases are used which fed by normalized particular features as wavelet energy ratio (WER) and ground index (GI). The PNNs are trained to provide faulted phase selection in different ten fault types. Finally, logic outputs of classifiers and GI identify the fault type. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is tested on transmission line using PSCAD/EMTDC software. Variation of operating conditions in train cases is limited, but it is wide for test cases. Also, quantity of the test data sets is larger than the train data sets. The results indicate that the proposed technique is high speed, accurate and robust for a wide variation in operating conditions and noisy environments.

Abstract: A Data Grid connects a collection of geographically distributed computational and storage resources that enables users to share data and other resources. Data replication, a technique much discussed by Data Grid researchers in recent years creates multiple copies of file and places them in various locations to shorten file access times. In this paper, a dynamic data replication strategy, called Modified Dynamic Hierarchical Replication (MDHR) is proposed. This strategy is an enhanced version of Dynamic Hierarchical Replication (DHR). However, replication should be used wisely because the storage capacity of each Grid site is limited. Thus, it is important to design an effective strategy for the replication replacement task. MDHR replaces replicas based on the last time the replica was requested, number of access, and size of replica. It selects the best replica location from among the many replicas based on response time that can be determined by considering the data transfer time, the storage access latency, the replica requests that waiting in the storage queue, the distance between nodes and CPU process capability. Simulation results utilizing the OptorSim show MDHR achieves better performance overall than other strategies in terms of job execution time, effective network usage and storage usage.

Optimal distribution substation placement is one of the major components of optimal distribution system planning projects. In this paper optimal substation placement problem is solved using Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) as a new developed heuristic optimization algorithm. This procedure gives the optimal size, site and installation time of medium voltage substation, using their related costs subject to operating and optimization constraints. A multistage and pseudo-dynamic expansion planning is applied to consider dynamic of the system parameters for example, load forecasting uncertainty, asset management and geographical constraints. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method a sensitivity analysis of ICA parameters on obtained results is done. A graphical representation of obtained results is used to show the efficiency and capability of the proposed method both from the planning view and graphical aspects. The results show the efficiency and capability of the proposed method which has been tested on a real size distribution network.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach based on the Least Squares Error method for estimating the unknown parameters of the nonlinear 3rd order synchronous generator model. The proposed method uses the mathematical relationships between the machine parameters and on-line input/output measurements to estimate the parameters of the nonlinear state space model. The field voltage is considered as the input and the rotor angle and the active power are considered as the generator outputs. In fact, the third order nonlinear state space model is converted to only two linear regression equations. Then, easy-implemented regression equations are used to estimate the unknown parameters of the nonlinear model. The suggested approach is evaluated for a sample synchronous machine model. Estimated parameters are tested for different inputs at different operating conditions. The effect of noise is also considered in this study. Simulation results show that the proposed approach provides good accuracy for parameter estimation.

One of the related problems of OCR systems is discrimination of fonts in machine printed document images. This task improves performance of general OCR systems. Proposed methods in this paper are based on various fractal dimensions for font discrimination. First, some predefined fractal dimensions were combined with directional methods to enhance font differentiation. Then, a novel fractal dimension was introduced in this paper for the first time. Our feature extraction methods which consider font recognition as texture identification are independent of document content. Experimental results on different pages written by several font types show that fractal geometry can overcome the complexities of font recognition problem.

In Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs) the reduction of cogging torque is one of the most important problems in their performance and evaluation. In this paper, at first, a direct-drive vertical-axis wind turbine is chosen. According to its nominal value operational point, necessary parameters for the generator is extracted. Due to an analytical method, four generators with different pole-slot combinations are designed. Average torque, torque ripple and cogging torque are evaluated based on finite element method. The combination with best performance is chosen and with the analysis of variation of effective parameters on cogging torque, and introducing a useful method, an improved design of the PMSG with lowest cogging torque and maximum average torque is obtained. The results show a proper performance and a correctness of the proposed method.

Abstract

In this paper, a novel stator current based Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) estimator for speed estimation in the speed-sensorless vector controlled induction motor drives is presented. In the proposed MRAS estimator, measured stator current of the induction motor is considered as a reference model. The estimated stator current is produced in an adjustable model to compare with the measured stator current, where rotor flux identification is needed for stator current estimation. In the available stator current based MRAS estimator, rotor flux is estimated by the use of measured stator current, where the adjustable model and reference model depend on each other since measured stator current is employed in both of them. To improve the performance of the MRAS speed estimator, both the stator current and rotor flux are estimated in the adjustable model by using the state space equations of the induction motor, adjusted with the rotor speed calculated by an adaptation mechanism. The stability of the proposed MRAS estimator is studied through a small signal analysis. Senorless induction motor drive along with the proposed MRAS speed estimator is verified through computer simulations. In addition, performance of the proposed MRAS is compared with the available stator current based MRAS speed estimator

Abstract

This paper develops an effective control framework for DC voltage control and power-sharing of multi-terminal DC (MTDC) grids based on an optimal power flow (OPF) procedure and the voltage-droop control. In the proposed approach, an OPF algorithm is executed at the secondary level to find optimal reference of DC voltages and active powers of all voltage-regulating converters. Then, the voltage droop characteristics of voltage-regulating converters, at the primary level, are tuned based on the OPF results such that the operating point of the MTDC grid lies on the voltage droop characteristics. Consequently, the optimally-tuned voltage droop controller leads to the optimal operation of the MTDC grid. In case of variation in load or generation of the grid, a new stable operating point is achieved based on the voltage droop characteristics. By execution of a new OPF, the voltage droop characteristics are re-tuned for optimal operation of the MTDC grid after the occurrence of the load or generation variations. The results of simulation on a grid inspired by CIGRE B4 DC grid test system demonstrate efficient grid performance under the proposed control strategy.

Abstract

Synchronous generators are of two type’s salient pole type and round rotor type. The load angle curve of a cylindrical rotor synchronous machine comprises a single sine term only while in salient pole synchronous generators, power-angle characteristic has two terms. The first term is the fundamental component due to field excitation (the same as the cylindrical rotor) and the second term includes the effect of salient pole. In fact, this term is the second harmonic component due to reluctance torque. This paper presents a study on the new design of cylindrical solid rotor synchronous generator. In this new design, rotor of the machine is designed in such a way that the required inductance values are reached to produce reluctance torque, besides electromagnetic torque due to field excitation. In this contribution, a combination of two different ferromagnetic materials is considered in the design of the rotor. In this theory, the tight connection between the different materials is very important from a mechanical point of view. In other words, this new idea and production principal has potential in some areas after some further research and engineering. But this paper is focused on magnetic flux-carrying materials and presents a study of the new design of cylindrical solid rotor synchronous generator (NCG). Then a comparative analysis was made between this new (NCG) and conventional cylindrical solid rotor synchronous generator (CCG) and the effectiveness of the new cylindrical solid rotor from a magnetic point of view is demonstrated. In this paper, mechanical and thermal aspects of design such as vibration did not analyze.

In this paper, a special preprocessing operations (filter) is proposed to decrease
the effects of noise of textures. This filter using average of circular neighbor points (Cmean)
to reduce noise effect. Comparing this filter with other average filters such as square
mean filter and square median filter indicates that it provides more noise reduction and
increases the classification accuracy. After applying filter to noisy textures some Local
Binary Pattern (LBP) variants are used for feature extraction. The Implementation part for
noisy textures of Outex, UIUC and CUReT datasets shows that using proposed filter
increases the classification accuracy significantly. Furthermore, a simple and new technique
is proposed that increases the speed of c-mean filter noticeably.

This paper introduces the indicators for surge arrester condition assessment based on the leakage current analysis. Maximum amplitude of fundamental harmonic of the resistive leakage current, maximum amplitude of third harmonic of the resistive leakage current and maximum amplitude of fundamental harmonic of the capacitive leakage current were used as indicators for surge arrester condition monitoring. Also, the effects of operating voltage fluctuation, third harmonic of voltage, overvoltage and surge arrester aging on these indicators were studied. Then, obtained data are applied to the multi-layer support vector machine for recognizing of surge arrester conditions. Obtained results show that introduced indicators have the high ability for evaluation of surge arrester conditions.

Abstract

Multilevel voltage source inverters have several advantages compare to traditional voltage source inverter. These inverters reduce cost, get better voltage waveform and decrease Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) by increasing the levels of output voltage. In this paper Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) methods are used to find the switching angles for achieving to the minimum THD for output voltage waveform of the Cascaded H-bridge Multi-Level Inverters (MLI). These methods are used for a 27-level inverter for different modulation indices. Result of two methods is identical and in comparison to other methods have the smallest THD. To verify results of two mentioned methods, a simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software is presented.

One of the instruments for determination of position used in several applications is the Global Positioning System (GPS). With a cheap GPS receiver, we can easily find the approximate position of an object. Accuracy estimation depends on some parameters such as dilution of precision, atmospheric error, receiver noise, and multipath. In this study, position accuracy with GPS receiver is classified in three classes. Nine classification methods are utilized and compared. Finally, a new method is selected for classification. Results are verified with experimental data. Success rate for classificationis approximately 84%.
